Qlik Sense stories feature is a way to build slides out of your dashboards directly within Qlik. The slides can then be exported or made public to other users. This article will cover:

  • How to build a story
  • How to export a story
  • How to share a story
  • How to access existing stories

How to build a story

You can start building a story from the app overview or from within any sheet.

In the app overview, click on ‘Stories’ in the app content selector bar. Then click ‘Create new’ in the ‘My stories’ section. This will take you to the story screen.

When in any sheet, click the ‘Storytelling’ button in the top bar to be taken to the story screen.

The story screen looks as follows:

The elements on the screen are:

  1. The top bar
  2. The story toolkit
  3. Slide list
  4. Slide content

The top bar

The top bar is used for navigation. The most useful features, from left to right, are the sheet button which takes you to a sheet in the app, the storytelling button and the app name button. Clicking the app name button will open up the app’s description.

The story toolkit

The story toolkit bar is how you can create additional slides and actually add content to them. From left to right, the buttons function as follows:

  • Add a slide: adds a slide below the current one.
  • Add a snapshot: when viewing a chart, you can take a snapshot of it by right clicking on it and selecting the ‘snapshot’ option. These snapshots are available here.
  • Text: adds a text box of choice (title or paragraph).
  • Shapes: there is a library of basic shapes that you can use in the slides.
  • Effects: effects let you highlight values on certain types of charts. Just drag the relevant effect onto the chart you want.
  • Media: use this button to add media files, such as images, to the slide. Note that you may not have permission to upload new media to the app. Speak to your app’s developer if you require media files that are not currently in the app.
  • Sheets: this button lets you insert the whole sheet into the slide. When viewing the story, you can make selections as you would normally and the data will update.
  • Action buttons: buttons to cut, copy, paste and delete content. Undo and redo buttons live to the right of here.
  • Stories list: the ‘Stories’ button will show all the stories in this app.
  • Play: the ‘Play story’ button will begin the slideshow.

The slide list

The slide list is just a list of slides in this story. By right clicking on a slide, you can duplicate or delete it.

The slide content

Filling the slide with content is very intuitive. Just click and drag the elements where you need them. You can also resize elements by clicking and dragging them on the corner. Depending on the type of element you’re working with, you may see additional options available.

How to export a story

To export a finished story, click on the ellipsis in the app’s top bar. Select ‘Download story’ to begin the export process.

How to share a story

To make the story available to other users, click on the ellipsis in the app’s top bar. Select ‘Make story public’. Note that you may not have permission to publish stories. Speak to your Qlik Sense administrator if you don’t have this option.

How to existing stories

You can access existing stories like you create a new one. From the app overview, click on ‘Stories’. Here, you will see public stories as well as your own stories. From within a sheet, click on the ‘Storytelling’ button to be taken to a new story. You can then select an existing story by using the ‘Stories’ button in the story toolkit bar.
