This article will cover the features of the Qlik Sense data model viewer interface. Note that some features of the interface may look slightly different depending on the product and version you are using.

The data model viewer is where you can visually see all the tables in the app and how they are associated with one another. Note that this page of the app isn’t available when there is no data loaded.

The data model viewer consists of:

  1. The app top bar
  2. The data model viewer top bar
  3. The model
  4. The model view controls
  5. The data preview

The app top bar

The app top bar is the top bar visible on every page of the app. See ‘App Overview Interface’ for further information on the top bar.

The data model viewer top bar

This top bar solely consists of toggles that slightly change how the model is displayed.

The first 3 buttons all control how expanded the tables in the model view are. The first button collapses all fields, leaving the table name only. The second button shows the key fields only. The key fields are the fields on which the tables are associated. The third button fully expands the tables.

The next 2 buttons are to show ‘Internal table view’ or ‘Source table view’. The internal table view is how Qlik sees the data model. This means that if your model has synthetic keys, those tables will be visible here.

The last button in the top bar allows you to toggle between a grid layout or an automatic layout.

The model

The model consists of the tables loaded into the app. If the tables are associated, the fields on which those associations are made are connected with a line. Depending on the model, there may be other connections shown such as synthetic keys.

The model view controls

The magnifying glass allows you to search through the data model. This can be very useful for large models so that you don’t have to read through each table’s fields to find the one you’re after.

The padlock below this lets you lock and unlock the data model. This is useful because you can drag the tables around to better position them for viewing. Once you’ve got them just right, you can lock the model so that it doesn’t change back when you close the app or refresh the page.

Then you have the zoom options. You can zoom in and out as needed and the home icon will restore the original zoom level if needed.

The data preview

The data preview can be toggled to show and hide. You can preview a single table by clicking on the table name or a field by clicking on the field.

When you preview a table, you get a summary of what the table contains such as the rows, fields, keys and tags, as well as a small sample of the data.

When previewing a field you get an overview of field-specific metrics. You also get the option to add the field as a master dimension or measure.
