In Qlik Sense, as a user, you have several options to customise the visualizations your developer provides. This article will cover these customisation options, including:

  • How to enlarge a visualisation
  • Data, sorting and presentation options
  • How to view a visualisation as a data table
  • How to subscribe to a visualisation
  • How to create an alert
  • How to download a visualisation

How to enlarge a visualisation

If you’re using Qlik Sense on a small screen, it might be useful to enlarge a visualisation to be full screen so you can see it better. To do this, right click on the visualisation and click on the double arrows to make it full screen.

To zoom back out of the visualisation, hit the Esc key or click the cross in the upper right of the visualisation.

Data, sorting and presentation options

Depending on the visualisation type and how your developer has built it, you may be able to change the way the visualisation looks. To access options relating to data, sorting and appearance of the visualisation, right click on it and select the data toggle.

You will see a sidebar on the right of the screen that has the following options: Data, Sorting, Presentation, Colors and legend.

Data

The ‘Data’ section shows the dimensions and measures used in the visualisation. Click on the name of the dimension or measure to see if you can switch the chart to another one. If options are available, you can click on them and the chart will change. Note that you can also switch the chart to a different measure or visualization when you’re viewing it by clicking on the arrows next to the dimension or measure name on the axis.

Sorting

The sorting options change how the data in the chart is sorted. For example, if your bar chart has a dimension and a measure, you can either sort the chart by the dimension or by the measure. You can also change whether the sorting is ascending or descending. To change the sorting order, just click and drag the various dimensions and measures into the right order. To change the sorting from ascending to descending and vice versa, click on the relevant dimension or measure to open the options and select the right sorting option.

Presentation

The options available under the ‘Presentation’ section will vary depending on the type of visualisation. For a bar chart, you can add value labels and change the bars from horizontal to vertical and vice versa. For a line chart, you can add value labels and change the chart from line to area and vice versa. Explore the options to find out more.

Colors and legend

The colours and legend options may also vary depending on the chart. Usually, you can change the colour of the visualisation using one of the following options:

  • Auto: how your developer designed it
  • Single colour: a single colour visualisation
  • By dimension: each dimension value is coloured a different colour
  • By measure: the visualisation is coloured by the measure based on a min to max scale

How to view a visualisation as a data table

In Qlik Sense, you can view a chart as a data table. This is useful if you want to eyeball the actual numbers. Right click on the visualisation and select the ellipsis button. Then choose ‘View data’. To change it back, right click the visualisation again and select the ellipsis. Select ‘View chart’.

How to subscribe to a visualisation

Note this option is only available in Qlik Cloud. Subscribing to a visualisation means you will receive this visualisation in an email on a regular basis. Right click on the visualisation and select the ellipsis button. Then choose ‘Subscribe’. The information you need to enter when subscribing is the title and description that will show in the email, the schedule and you can also add additional users to this subscription if you want. Note that your Qlik Sense administrator must have configured this function for it to work.

How to create an alert

Note this option is only available in Qlik Cloud. Alerts are notifications that you receive when a specific event happens. Right click on the visualisation and select the ellipsis button. Then choose ‘Alerts’ > ‘Create new’. Follow the steps to set up an alert. If you’re not sure on the condition for your alert, speak to the app’s developer.

How to download a visualisation

By default, you can download any visualisations. Note that your Qlik Sense administrators can disable this option. You can download visualisations in three formats: as an Excel file, as an image and as a PDF. Right click on the visualisation and select the ellipsis button. Then choose ‘Download’. In the resulting pop up specify what format you want and click ‘Download’.
